Album Recommendation: Black Stone Cherry

With their self titled album released on July, 18th 2006, southern rockers Black Stone Cherry from Edmonton, Kentucky – made one of the best debut rock albums I’ve heard.

They got labelled with “influences including Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Black Sabbath, but also a heavy side touching more in a Black Label Society vein.” and with such a tag I had to check them out and WOW! did they deliver.

Combining crunching riffs, dynamic drums, gritty, raw vocals, Black Stone Cherry blew me away.

Track listing:

  1. Rain Wizard
  2. Backwoods Gold
  3. Lonely Train
  4. Maybe Someday
  5. When the Weight Comes Down
  6. Crosstown Woman
  7. Shooting Star
  8. Hell & High Water
  9. Shapes of Things
  10. Violator Girl
  11. Tired of the Rain
  12. Drive
  13. Rollin’ On

Band Members:
Chris Robertson (vocals, guitars, slide guitar)
Ben Wells (guitars, electric sitar, background vocals)
Jon Lawhon (electric bass, background vocals)
John Fred Young (drums, percussion, background vocals)

Standout tracks are difficult to pick out since there is not a single bad track on this album.
If I had to pick 3 songs it would be – Violator Girl, Lonely Train & Drive.
.. Or Rain Wizard or Shape of Things… and so I could go on and on.

Simply put, a stunning debut album which is strongly recommended.

I personally favour this debut album from Black Stone Cherry above the sophomore effort, so I certainly agree with you Scott. But then again I would since I wrote the recommendation ;)
