I have discovered – Helicon

In the first of my two discoveries today, I will be introducing some local bands from right here in Scotland.

Formed in my home town, the band from East Kilbride/Glasgow was put together by brothers John-Paul (lead guitar and vocals) and Gary Hughes (rhythm guitar and vocals) with Laura O’Brien (keys, synthesizers, violin, harmonica).

They were then joined by friends Steven Jamieson on bass and Martin MacVicar on drums which completed the line-up of Helicon.

Playing psychedelic rock, the band has cited a lot of influences to their music – The Brian Jonestown Massacre / The Warlocks / The Black Angels / Mogwai / My Bloody Valentine / The Velvet Underground / 13th Floor Elevators / Twilight Sad / Acid Mothers Temple / Spacemen 3 / Spiritualized / Sonic Youth / The Jesus and Mary Chain / The Committee to Keep Music Evil.

Helicon produce a beautifully slowed down take on traditional elements of psychedelic music. The tracks on the EP mix visceral broodiness with envigorating, light-after-dark hopefulness. While the effect ridden, layered instrumentation conjures up favourable comparisons to The Warlocks last two recorded efforts, Helicon’s vocals take the music to a new place – somewhere heading up and out of the uncertain terrain of limbo. – Beath Keating, Drone Magazine

Helicon have just released a three track EP which is available to purchase at Apollo Audio now but you can listen to the full EP streaming in the widget below or at the bands MySpace.
