Slam Dunk Interview: While She Sleeps

Drummer Adam Savage and bassist Aran Mckenzie of While She Sleeps spoke to EspyRock before they were to play their second Slam Dunk Festival show at Hatfield.

How has the response been to your latest music video ‘This Is The Six’?

Yeah, we’ve been pleased with it, that’s some eight years, an all-round good reaction, getting quite a few plays on YouTube, so it’s getting out there.

I gathered that the ‘Six’ refers to your fans.

It’s got a couple of meanings, actually. One is that we call ourselves ‘Sleep’, so it’s about the six layers of sleep. And then there’s the other meaning; we are the five, and they (the fans) are the six.

Could you tell me a bit more about the relationship you share with your fans?

Yeah it’s quite tight, closed, to be honest. We think of them as our family and fan-base. When everyone’s enjoying at a gig, we always bond so well. We always like to hang out after gigs and not hide away and interact with them. They are Sleep’s Army!

How was Slam Dunk North yesterday at Leeds?

Yeah it was wicked, packed real. Everyone got very drunk, got two hours of sleep and had to drive two hours and get up and drive here but I feel surprisingly all right!

What is it like sharing the stage with the likes of Architects, Cancer Bats and Every Time I Die at the Honour Over Glory stage?

All of those bands really killed it yesterday, and they’re all really amazing. Especially Every Time I Die, they just played an awesome show. It’s a good line-up!

You played at Slam Dunk last year as well. What do you think has been the biggest change now that you have returned to perform at the festival this time?

The stages have changed. We’re now playing at a bigger stage. Also probably playing at later on, bit better time for us. We can relax and just cool it before we get on.

Who are you looking forward to seeing here this year?

I wanted to catch Lower Than Atlantis, but I’ve missed them again! We’ll definitely catch Every Time I Die again, though.

What’s the word on the album? What can we expect?

The same shit, but better. Personally we think it’s better! Kind of like our first album ‘The North Stands For Nothing’, but with new elements thrown in at the same time. We’re really proud of it and can’t for it to be released.
