Album Review: Deftones – Diamond Eyes

‘Diamond Eyes’ is the sixth studio album by American experimental metal pioneers Deftones. ‘Eros’ was the album that was originally scheduled to be the bands next release, but following bassist Chi Cheng’s car accident that led to him entering a coma in November 2008, Deftones decided to keep that album on hold. Instead they gave us ‘Diamond Eyes’, a more melodic and optimistic album than any of the bands previous releases. But make no mistake, this is still the Deftones we know and love.

Songs like ‘CMND/CTRL’ and ‘Royal’ feel like they have been lifted straight out of the bands ‘Around The Fur’ days, given an injection of recent more experimental Deftones releases in the chorus’s with front man Chino Moreno doing what he does best. ‘Beauty School’ and ‘Sextape’ perhaps showcase Chino’s poetic lyrics and fantastic voice best with both being relatively soft songs and showing the bands more experimental side. The bands first single from the album, titled ‘Rocket Skates’, features guitarist Stephen Carpenter using an 8-string guitar for the overwhelmingly heavy opening riff and Chino screaming “GUNS! RAZORS! KNIFES!/Fuck with me.” at the chorus, surely making it one not to be missed live.

Instead of being bundled into the ‘early’ or ‘later’ Deftones sounds, ‘Diamond Eyes’ stands in a category of its own. Being an almost perfect mix of both with some new elements thrown in, it just proves that Deftones are a band that refuse to remain still and continue to push boundaries with every release. [9]

‘Diamond Eyes’ is released on May 4th through Warner Bros and Reprise Records.

We here at Espyrock wish Chi Cheng’s family and friends all the best and hope he recovers well soon.
