Freebass – new supergroup?

The word Supergroup are being thrown around a bit too lightly these days, in my opinion, but even I do it so I guess it all depends if you are a fan of the members involved or not. AnyhowFreebass are a new group consisting of bass players Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order), Mani (Stone Roses, Primal Scream), Andy Rourke (The Smiths) + singer Gary Briggs (formerly of Haven) & drums Paul Kehoe.

The idea to form a band centralised around three bass players came out on a drunken night and was started by Hook and Mani as “a reaction because our groups New Order and Primals had been stalled”. All of the songs will have three basses; Peter Hook stated in a NME interview “Mani does the low part, Andy Rourke in the middle and I do the high bit … it works out quite well”.

And in a 2006 interview with Argentine newspaper Página/12 Peter Hook expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the band, “We’ve already written 17 tracks and the album’s coming along very well. We hope to finish it soon.” He also explained why he was so determined to succeed. “The reason we decided to do it was because everyone laughed in our face when we suggested the idea. So we thought, ‘Fuck them! We’re gonna show them.'”

The group are now finished in studio and are looking to release the record digitally within a few weeks (physical in January) and it will be accompanied with a digital EP Two Worlds Collide, where they have used several guest singers such as Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Pete Wylie (Wah! Heat), Howard Marks (a.k.a. Mr Nice). Other notable guest – Bobby Gillespie, Liam Gallagher, Billy Corgan, Ian Brown, Rowetta.
