Band 1

Band: Chiodos
Check out the album: Bone Palace Ballet
Purchase album: Chiodos - Bone Palace Ballet: Grand Coda UK / Chiodos - Bone Palace Ballet: Grand Coda US

Chiodos is an American post-hardcore band from Davison, Michigan, formed in 2001 at the Flint Local 432, a small venue in downtown Flint, Michigan and Olde Jamestowne Hall in Saginaw, Michigan.

Originally known as “The Chiodos Bros.” the band’s name was a tribute to filmmakers Stephen, Charles, and Edward Chiodo, responsible for the movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

The band is known for their on-stage performances which include controlled, high-pitched vocals from former lead singer, Craig Owens. Craig Owens has cited lead singer of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, etc. fame, Mike Patton as one of his greatest influences saying, “I only wish I could be as good as him.”

Their second full length album, Bone Palace Ballet, was released in North America on September 4, 2007 and debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on Top Independent Albums. Warner Bros. Records released Bone Palace Ballet on January 26, 2009, as part of a new distribution deal in the UK.

Band 2

Band: Mogwai
Check out the album: Mr. Beast
Purchase album: Mogwai - Mr. Beast UK / Mogwai - Mr. Beast US

Mogwai is a post-rock band from Glasgow formed in 1995 that have become one of the most influential and best known bands in their genre.

They compose lengthy, mostly instrumental guitar-based pieces in the style of post-rock, usually focused around the elaboration of a single theme, and are known traditionally for their quiet/loud dynamic, defined bass riffs, and an eminent ambient sound, sometimes dark and sometimes grand.

Although frequently referred to as post-rock, the band have revealed in interviews that they despise this categorization, insisting that their sound bears little resemblance to pioneers of the genre, such as Tortoise.

Their style has been influenced by such bands as The Cure, Joy Division, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, and post-rock granddaddies Slint.

Band 3

Band: Trippy Wicked
Check out the album: Movin On (listen to the full album here)
Purchase Album: CD / Amazon UK (MP3) / Amazon US (MP3) / Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight - Movin On UK / Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight - Movin On US

Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight – A rolling, thundering mass of infectious riffs, distorted gut-busting bass, tripped out vocals, relentless beats and hairy sweaty faces twisted with grins and gurns.
Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight cut a groove deeper than the ocean abyss.
Playing a mix of stoner rock, doom, sludge and blues the band has officially released the full length debut album on October 30th.

The album captures everything that the band has ever stood for in their music with a 10 track, 52 minute epic musical journey of songs about living the good life, fire, growing beards, girls, aliens, loneliness, pirates, love and so much more.

Movin On is full of the sexiest, sleaziest stoner, doom, blues, whatever-the-hell-you-wanna-call-it riffs you ever heard and was recorded in June 2009 under the warm Dorset sunshine at Chuckalumba studios.

Band 4

Band: Sucioperro
Check out the EP: The Dissident Code
Purchase EP: Sucioperro - The Dissident Code UK / Sucioperro - The Dissident Code US

Sucioperro are a three piece from Ayr in Scotland, who play spiralling off kilter alt-rock. They are indeed alt-rock but they go beyond this as a band. They’ve cited their influences as Rage Against the Machine, Crowded House, Pearl Jam, Tool, Jimmy Eat World, Talking Heads, The Police, Prince and “anything vibed/energetic/real”.

This mix of musical influences all comes out in their live show, which is something that you simply cannot miss. It’s heavy, kids sweat, people sing, bodies sway but there’s something else as well underneath their “muscular, riff based instrumental rock” as Dragon describes. Their lyrics breathe emotion, their riffs are “muscular” but their songs are teaming with melody and beauty. It’s not only just their show that you immediately get excited about but it’s the feeling that Sucioperro are one of those bands who kick life into rock and inject it with some passion and originality.

Band 5

Band: Ashes of Soma
Check out the album: Exit 674
Purchase album: Ashes of Soma - Exit 674 UK / Ashes of Soma - Exit 674 US

Three Windsor high school classmates which consisted of Gray, Preney, and an unnamed vocalist sought out to start a band and found their drummer in Paul Doman, creating the band Knematic. After two separate incidents forced Gray and the former vocalist to leave the band, the band was left with a void. Ashes of Soma found their bassist in between the incidents, and Gray later happily rejoined the band as the new vocalist. After a couple of years of developing their sound, they recorded their first record, Exit 674. The first single released is “Emancipate”. The band is working with record producer David Bendeth (known for his work with Breaking Benjamin and Killswitch Engage) as they record their second album.

They have toured in the US and Canada with Candlebox, Default, Hinder, and Theory of a Deadman. They have also toured with Social Code, Idol Sons, Evans Blue and Thornley.

The band’s influences include Tool, Sevendust, Disturbed, Finger Eleven, and I Mother Earth.

In December 2008 the band released their third single “Bedroom Walls” and it received heavy air play on Canadian rock stations as well as WRIF (Detroit) and 89X (Windsor/Detroit) in Michigan.
