Trivium to unleash new album In Waves in August

Florida metal titans Trivium will release their new album In Waves on August 8th.   The follow-up to 2008’s Shogun was recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with the production/mixing team of Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Bullet For My Valentine, Slipknot) and Martin “Ginge” Ford, along with engineer Carl Bown.

Trivium exploded onto the global metal scene in 2005 with their Roadrunner Records debut album Ascendency, which was rapidly certified Gold in the UK and landed the band multiple Best New Band accolades. Extremely young at the time and with songwriting and musicianship far beyond their years, the band went out and toured with giants of the metal world, including Iron Maiden, Slayer, Slipknot, Metallica, Heaven & Hell, and many more.  Over the course of those years and following albums – 2006’s The Crusade and 2008’s Shogun – the band honed their skills further, while sharpening their vision for the band and their music – and even landing a #7 National Album Chart position in the UK.

In the words of frontman Matt Heafy, this new album is the culmination:  “In Waves to us… is Trivium.  In Waves is the music, the artwork, the videos, and the live show; they are all part of an interconnected whole.  There’s no question about it, in our eyes, that this is the most complete project we’ve ever done.  We think we’ve finally made the record that we’ve always strived to make.”

Guitarist Corey Beaulieu continues, “In Waves also has a few tracks that explore a direction we haven’t gone before by having songs that feature all heavy vocals.  This was another way for us to push the boundaries of our sound and to continue to try new things but still be 100% Trivium. Each track has its own distinct vibe – from the black metal tinged Dusk Dismantled, to the chaotic riffing of Skyline Severance, to the nonstop bludgeoning of Chaos Reigns…  these tracks show a new side of us.”

While the album naturally boasts the guitar-driven edge that fans have come to love and expect from the band – the visual and lyrical world that In Waves inhabits is a leap forward for Trivium.  Inspired as much by contemporary film and visual art as by the band’s love of heavy music, all of the imagery – including album art, videos, stage sets, and web properties – takes Trivium and their fans on a journey into unexplored territory.  The visual project was collaborative effort between the band and a team of select artists.  Between them, they have  created a unique set of visuals that are like a graphic novel come to life.

The video for titular first single In Waves will premiere this Friday. “In Waves was the first song I wrote after we finished touring for Shogun”, comments bassist Paolo Gregoletto.  “The main riff came about at the end of a lot of turmoil for us.  Every cliché about being on a roller coaster ride, slamming on the brakes and hitting a brick wall, all happened at once in the midst of some of the biggest touring we’ve ever done.  We were truly on the brink of collapse and I was angry and frustrated that I didn’t care anymore. The In Waves riff to me is what that anger and hopelessness I felt would sound like, if it were able to emote itself musically.  Inspirationally, it’s somewhere between the technicality of Meshuggah and the straightforward groove of Sepultura, while channeling our older albums where we embraced locking up rhythmically as a band.”

In Waves also marks the recording debut of new drummer Nick Augusto with Trivium. “Nick and I go way back”, explains Paolo. “We first started a thrash band together at 13! We stayed friends over the years and when we needed a drum tech and then eventually a drummer, he was the first and only person I suggested for the job.  I called and asked him if he would be willing to learn a full headlining set in 12 days and be ready to tour immediately! Having Nick in the band feels like the four of us are starting our first band all over again.  I vividly remember the first day we started jamming as a full band before the first tour with him. Corey and I had been jamming Into the Mouth of Hell We March with Nick to warm up before Matt got there, and at the end of the song Matt came in with a look of disbelief in his eyes.  He told us he had been standing outside just listening to Nick bust through the song like he had been in the band for years.  Later that night we went to a bar and celebrated like we had just played the biggest show of our lives.”

There is a unifying theme to In Waves, but it’s not a concept album by any means.  Heafy elaborates, “The album is not a concept record, but there is a certain theme to all of the visuals and sonically and visually it all ties together.  We are very proud of what we’ve accomplished with In Waves and we are excited to share it with everyone!”
