Album Review: Coheed And Cambria – Year Of The Black Rainbow

Coheed And Cambria release their fifth studio album, ‘Year Of The Black Rainbow’, on April 12th (UK, April 13th, US) and here’s just a quick review of the album.

Starting the ‘Armory Wars’ story written by frontman Claudio Sanchez, ‘Year Of The Black Rainbow’ is the beginning of the entire story. The album continues with Coheed’s Prog-Rock trend that has kept them to such a cult following since their inception.

The album begins with a Sci-Fi-esque intro in ‘One’ which lasts for over a minute of plainly haunting sounds leading into the first track released by the band from the album, ‘The Broken’, this just sets the tone for the entire album from the outset.

With a mix of amazing riffs, powerful vocals and some softer songs the album conveys a mixture of differing emotions and styles in music. The speed at the beginning of ‘Guns Of Summer’ in contrast to how slow the entire song ‘Pearl Of The Stars’ is staggering, and Claudio and the rest of the band show their musical prowess throughout.

Finishing with a seven minute long title track, a fitting end to an almost flawless album, Coheed have shown that they have grown, and with an album that should hopefully open up the entire story to anyone who never quite “got” Coheed before, Coheed mean business! [8]

Coheed and Cambria will appear at this year’s Download Festival alongside headliners AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine, Aerosmith, Bullet For My Valentine and many more acts.

They will also return to the UK to play 3 headline shows in support of the new album with Circe Survive and Torche supporting. Dates:

22nd June – Glasgow ABC
23rd June – Newcastle Academy
24th June – London HMV Forum
