Gig Review: Parkway Drive – The Forum, London – 25th April 2010

It’s only been a few short weeks since Despised Icon [9] suddenly announced they were splitting up, much to the chagrin of fans, so it’s hardly surprising that in many ways they are the highlight of tonight’s show at The Forum. And what a way to go out too. Arguably one of their finest performances this side of the Atlantic, the guys almost seem to be enjoying themselves now that they know there won’t be a return to these shores. From a thundering ‘MVP’ to a bludgeoning ‘Furtive Monologue’ and a barbarous ‘Retina’, there’s no fault to be found. Thanks for the memories guys, you will be missed.

The Canadians are, of course, sandwiched between Winds Of Plague [6] and headliners Parkway Drive [9]. The former are surprisingly disappointing, given the raw bluster of their last studio effort ‘The Great Stone War’, and certainly not helped by a PA that makes them sound like one, toneless mush. No such problems for the Aussie headliners though. The UK has quickly become a second home to these guys, and they’re obviously feeling the love tonight with a set that can best be described as repeatedly running into a wall face first. That they’ve become huge in Europe is beyond doubt – the only question now is how high can they rise.
