Shinedown

Gig Review: Shinedown, O2 Academy, Glasgow, 16th February 2012

Liberty Lies [6] got the night underway with a storming start to their set but it didn’t last long as terrible squeals from their guitars quickly destroyed their early momentum. The band continued on despite this and it ultimately spoiled their performance. Poor sound coupled with some bad lighting held the band back and they left the stage having performed an average set.

Halestorm [8] were billed as special guests for this tour and they lived up to the title as soon as they hit the stage. Opening with new tracks can sometimes cause a bit of a stir but ‘Love Bites (So Do I)’ went down a treat with a pumped up Glasgow crowd. The band carried that energy through their entire set as they mixed new tracks in with Halestorm classics. The highlight of their set was a solo performance of the Heart classic ‘Crazy on You’ by front woman Lzzy Hale which showcased her impressive vocal strength and range.

It was finally time for the act everyone was here to see. Shinedown [9] took the stage to massive applause and utilised that energy as they went straight into ‘Sound of Madness’ and a new track titled ‘Enemies.’

With four tracks from their upcoming album ‘Amaryllis’ in the set, this was Shinedown’s first real opportunity to flaunt the material and boy, did they flaunt it well. The new tracks merged seamlessly with the old and created a great varied set.

On top of the music, vocalist Brent Smith engaged the crowd after every few songs with a story about the bands life, touring and even the songs they were about to play. I’ve seen bands ruin their entire show by speaking far too much but tonight Brent had the crowd hanging on his every word and it just enhanced every aspect of the show.

By the time the closing riffs of ‘Fly From The Inside’ were ringing inside the venue, Shinedown had shown that while they are one of the biggest names in hard rock, they are still improving and moving on to better things.

If you are attending this year’s Download Festival I suggest you check out Shinedown on the Sunday over at the second stage.
