Review: Jimmy Eat World, Glasgow Barrowlands, 19th November 2010

Friday night in Glasgow. A night for partying, alcohol and fun? Well only 1 of the 3 if you’re a Jimmy Eat World fan.

Tonight is the first time the band have been back at the Barrowlands in Glasgow since they last played here in February 2008 on the Chase This Light tour and tonight was a welcome return, however first up were tonight’s support Minus The Bear.

Minus The Bear are from Seattle and bring that tinge of American rock fuelled with political views right from the outset of their 40 minute set. However, the band as good as they were musically just didn’t have that extra “wow” factor to draw me in. I was really impressed with how they played but from the get go I just couldn’t focus fully on them. Saying that, the crowd seemed to get really well behind the band and I believe that were they to come back to the UK for a headline tour and played a venue such as the Garage or even the smaller Cathouse they would be in for an amazing show! Coming on stage at 9pm is no easy feat for any band to do but Jimmy Eat World seemed to take it in their stride, opening with classic hits ‘Bleed American/Salt Sweat Sugar’ and ‘A Praise Chorus’ the band played a set that spanned every album including new single ‘My Best Theory’. The band played with an energy that, in all honesty, I have not seen from any band really since Slipknot at Download 2009. Almost every big track was played but one gaping hole for me was previous album title track ‘Chase This Light’. Closing with a four piece encore of ‘Invented’, ‘Get It Faster’, huge track ‘The Middle’ and ‘Sweetness’ the band left to huge applause as well as an ovation that was unseen until tonight. All I can really say is this, if you even slightly like Jimmy Eat World, get yourself to their next tour and if you’re going to the Foo Fighters show next July 3rd, you’re in for one hell of a show!
