Review: The Ugly World Tour 2011 – Children of Bodom and Amon Amarth

Review and pics from the recent Ugly World Tour 2011 featuring Children of Bodom, Amon Amarth and Ensiferum.

The excitement was palpable at London’s Kentish Town Forum, as the crowds gathered to witness an epic double bill of Viking thunder and Finnish debauchery. First up were Ensiferum (7), who performed an extremely impressive and well-rounded set. It is difficult, to say the least, to go on stage knowing that you have to impress the fans of two of the biggest metal bands in the world, but the folk-metallers deliver an extremely assured performance that wins them many new fans in the process.

They are quickly show just how high the bar has been raised, however, by an absolutely barnstorming performance by Amon Amarth (9). On a high after the release of their latest album, ‘Surtur Rising’, their set is full of crowd-pleasing hits, thundering riffs from across the catalogue and more hair than you’ll find at an Essex hair salon. Even though the sound is as garbled as the Forum has managed in a long time, the sheer bluster of the performance makes up for it.

Which is not to say that Children of Bodom (9) were slouches. If anything, the Finns prove that they still haven’t lost their fire and can put on one hell of a show when they want to. Again, the sound system does its best to ruin things, but no one really cares when they are presented with a setlist that literally includes songs right from the first Bodom album until the latest. Alexi is on top form and what he lacks in stage presence and movement, Roope more than makes up for. The best ever Bodom performance? Not really. But it wasn’t too far off either.
